What is Hempcrete?

Hempcrete is a distinctive building material. It's composed of a bio-fibre (hemp shv) and the Mineral Binder (lime). These two components are combined by using water. The dampened binder covers all hemp particles shv.

Chemical reactions occur with the limestone binder as well as the water, leading to the binder setting and glueing the hurd particles. It is also described as "bonded insulation made of cellulose."

After the binder has fixed and dried, and any other water has evaporated from the mixture, the final product is called hempcrete. In contrast to other composites for construction (such as mortar, concrete and even plaster) the binder portion in hempcrete is not designed to fill in all the gaps between the hemp particles instead, it's designed to cover the particles and allow them to stick to each other when they meet.

The hempcrete mix usually contains a significant amount of void space within the final mix.

Hempcrete comes with a variety of appealing structural, thermal and moisture-handling qualities that make it an ideal construction insulation material. Based on the mix of variables, hempcrete is a great choice for the roof, wall or slab insulation.

Benefits of Hempcrete

1. Non-toxic building material Hempcrete is generally an unharmful material. It is less herbicides and pesticides are utilized in agriculture, causing less environmental damage from the use of chemicals in the fields.

2. Hempcrete stores heat within it's thermal mass walls and releases it slowly as the building cools. That means that when you open a door, all the heat you've stored isn't going out straight away.

3. Hemp is the sole building material that has the ability to take carbon out of the air. Other insulation methods like fiberglass also have significant carbon footprints.

4. It's resistant to mold since it's water-absorbent. One square one meter of hemp wall can hold up 14 liters of water. The water is released into the soil or recycled.
